McCaskill; Audrey (Jamie)
Passed away with her loving family by her side at the age of 91 at the Ottawa Heart Institute, on Thursday, September 17, 2015. Beloved wife of 44 years to the late Bob. Dear mother of Moira (Brian Burkett), Anne (Pierre Gosselin) and Sheilagh (Jim Giffin). She will be lovingly remembered by grandchildren, Rob (Leslie), Alison (Emery), Daniel, Max, Kaitie and Maeve, and great-grandchildren, Callum, Aurora, and Elizabeth. Predeceased by her sister, Eleanor Collings.
Audrey grew up in South Porcupine, Ontario. In 1944 she joined the Navy and served throughout the war as a Wren Loran operator in Baccaro, Nova Scotia. It was there she fell in love with and married her husband Bob. Together they raised their family in Ottawa. Widowed at the age of 65, Audrey lived independently in her own home until her sudden illness.
Audrey was a highly intelligent, self-educated woman. She was a talented artist and craftsperson who delighted in sewing, knitting and creating hand-made gifts. She was a voracious reader, the thicker the book the better, and followed politics avidly. Arriving at emergency at the Heart Institute on Labour Day this lifelong Liberal said “I can’t go anywhere until after October19!” May her determination to vote inspire us all to exercise our franchise.
Audrey’s gentle warmth, her dedication to her family and friends, her independence and dignity will survive in her children and grand and great grandchildren. She will be sorely missed.
A private family service was held on September 20. Donations in Audrey’s memory may be made to the Ottawa Heart Institute where she received amazing care for which the family is very grateful, or a charity of your choice.
