DAVID G. GRAY, M.B.Ch.B., FRCPC - age 85
With great sadness we announce the passing of Dr. David George Gray on August 9, 2015.

Born July 8, 1930 in Aberdeen, Scotland, David is survived by his wife Jacquie (Massé), sister Helen Coull (Alistair), children Stewart (Melanie), Brian (Jean), Keith, Fiona Tracey (Ron) and step daughter Kathy Vogt. David has 3 grandchildren - Camille and Cameron in Belleville and Spencer in Calgary. He is predeceased by his first wife Ella (Sutherland) and sister, Elizabeth (lan).

David's medical career spanned 55 years. He graduated from Aberdeen University Medical School in 1955 and in 1956 immigrated to Canada. He started in tuberculosis research in St. John's, Newfoundland and later Ottawa, Ontario. Early in his career, he became a member of the RCAF Auxiliary. He retired as a Wing Commander when the Auxiliary disbanded in 1964. In 1965, he graduated as one of the first residents from the University of Ottawa Radiology Program. David ultimately became the Chief of Medical Staff and Head of Radiology at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. Throughout his career he was deeply involved with all aspects of the profession. He was an associate professor at the University of Ottawa, a consultant for Saint Vincent de Paul, and one of the first reporting physicians for the Ottawa Breast Screening clinics. The final stage of his medical career was as an Independent Health Facilities Assessor for the Ontario College of Physicians, Quality Management Division. Throughout his career he was actively involved with the Canadian Association of Radiologists. He worked in multiple capacities and, in 1998, was awarded one of their first gold medals for his contribution to radiology in Canada.

David enjoyed a healthy, active life with his wife and children. His favourite place was the cottage. Summer holidays, evenings and weekends were spent at Adam Lake with family. Summers started with fireworks and burning the “schoolhouse”. Trips to Rideau Ferry for black balls and gas so children could water ski again and Portland for ice cream were regular events. David also loved to cycle. For many years he and Ella cycled the mountains in Vermont. David followed Ella’s lead and became a Scottish Country Dancer. He danced on the demonstration team and became a qualified instructor. He developed many long term friendships with this group. His wife Ella died in 1989 after a brief battle with cancer.

David married Jacqueline Vogt (nee Massé) in 1991. The two were wonderful friends and brought out the best in each other. They travelled extensively and adventurously with trips to Ecuador, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Tahiti, as well as many trips to family in Aberdeen and adventures in North America. David loved most being at Jacquie’s century cottage in the Laurentians. He persisted making gardens grow where there was little sun or earth, he snipped grass that grew on rocks and spent many hours enjoying good books and better scotch with friends and family. David described their marriage as “deeply loving and enjoyably companionable from the first “date” to the end”.

David will be honoured at a private family gathering. Friends are invited to celebrate David's life on

Tuesday, August 18th, 2015 at
Capital Funeral Home & Cemetery
3700 Prince of Wales Drive
613-692-1211
from 3:00pm - 6:00pm in the Carleton Lounge.
