It is with a heavy sense of loss that the family of Ken Ross announces his passing, at age 54, on Sunday, March 8, 2015, after a valiant fight against pneumonia and lymphoma with his wife Kelly and oldest son Tyler by his side.

Beloved husband and best friend of Kelly (his brown eyed girl), father and mentor of Tyler and Nicholas, stepfather of Angelo and Emilia Licari, son of Sheila and Richard Ross, brother of Kevin (Sandra) and Glen (Penny) and uncle to Brandon, Joel, Connor and Sam.

Ken’s customers at Ross’ Your Independent Grocer will miss his smile. His family, friends and colleagues will miss his passion. All of Barrhaven will miss his heart and soul.

In addition to being a loving and devoted husband, father and stepfather, Ken gave more of himself to the community than any other man to ever call Barrhaven home.

Through his community work at Ross’ Your Independent Grocer, Ken and Kelly Ross have poured more than $1 million back into the community. Ken was a tireless and relentless supporter of local charities, particularly ones that would help local families in need. He was a passionate leader of the Barrhaven Food Cupboard, a founding director of the South Nepean Autism Centre in 2007 and a winner of the Greater Nepean Chamber of Commerce Best Business Man of the Year in 2004, Good Neighbour of the Year Award in 2005 and Business of the Year Award in 2006. In 2006, Ken received the Lions Club International’s Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for his philanthropic work in the community. In 2011, Ken and Kelly were inducted as Field Knight and Dame into The Order of St. George, a prestigious philanthropic order that is nearly 700 years old. In 2013 Ken was presented with the prestigious Queen's Jubilee award. Over the Years Ken has received numerous community recognitions and awards.

For the past decade, Ken has been a driving force in the Barrhaven business community. He was a founder of the Barrhaven Business Improvement Area in 2006 and has been the organization’s chair since its inception. He took a leadership role in promoting smart growth in the community and in the promotion of local businesses.

But above all of his accomplishments, Ken Ross will be remembered for his kind and gentle nature and his warm smile. He truly loved Kelly, his family, his friends and his employees.

“If you see me smiling for no apparent reason as I walk around,” he said on his 50th birthday, “I am not crazy or on medication. I am simply enjoying life in Barrhaven.”

If your goal on this earth was to make it a better place, Ken, then you succeeded. And you have given us a beautiful template of how a life should be lived. Your footprint on our lives is immeasurable.

A thank you to the many doctors and nurses at The Ottawa Hospital - General Campus ICU for their excellent care of Ken, words alone cannot express the family’s gratitude. Thank you to all of our loving friends who have been an endless amount of tremendous support day and night, the entire staff at Ross’ YIG who have gone above and beyond and have truly demonstrated an environment of a second home where Ken and I spend so many hours of our lives, and the community who has shown so much compassion, a community which we are so proud to live, work and play. God Bless you all

Godspeed Ken.

Memorial donations to the Barrhaven Food Cupboard in Ken’s name would be greatly appreciated.
