Barry was born in Treherne, MB where he lived until he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. Barry’s work as an aircraft mechanic in the RCAF marked the beginning of a long career in aviation. Upon discharge, he worked in civil aviation as a helicopter maintenance engineer in Canada's northern and arctic regions before taking a position with Transport Canada in Prince Rupert, BC and Ottawa, ON. He then worked with the Transportation Safety Board in Winnipeg, MB and Ottawa, ON as an Aircraft Accident Investigator. Barry's career took him across Canada, often to remote locations under difficult conditions, but he enjoyed his work and always came home with incredible stories.

Barry was a very intelligent man with a good sense of humour. He was dedicated to his family and always enjoyed lively conversation with family and friends. Barry had a wealth of knowledge and the ability to retain and quickly recall facts. He was a natural at trivia and jeopardy and the person to go to for any information.

Barry is survived by his wife Ruth, son Brian (Fiona Smith), daughter Lauren (late Rob Greaves), and brother Dalton (Anita Gontier). Barry is also survived by his sister-in-law Philippa Currie (late Larry); nieces and nephews: Debbie Dupasquier (Jeff Olensky) and Lisa Yeremian (Ara); Michael (Nancy), Andrew, and Margaret Currie (Paul Hogan); great-nieces and great-nephews: Tiernan, Brookelynn and Brogan Currie; Taline and Arden Yeremian; Sydney Hogan and Gus McCallum.

Family and friends will all miss Barry's lively presence and generous heart.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in memoriam, to The Ottawa Hospital Foundation
