Edward Yaternick

Flight Lieutenant, RCAF (1939-1961)

RAF 550 BR SQDN

1917-2013

With great sadness, we announce the passing of our much-loved father and grandfather, Eddie, who slipped away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, November 12 2013 at the age of 95. He was pre-deceased by his beloved Annie, his parents Andrei and Tatiana, and brothers Steve, Pete and Mike, and sisters Mary, Ann, Ollie, and Jay and his little buddy, Chip.

Eddie is survived by Patricia, Estelle, Ward (Denise), and he was the loving grandfather and Poppa to David (Emilia), Jay (Jessie), Caitlin (Tristan), Matthew (Jen), and Laura.

Born in Gimli, Manitoba, Poppa joined the RCAF in 1939 and, during WWII, was on loan to the RAF 550 Bomber SQDN. After the war and postings throughout Europe, the U.K. and Canada, Eddie and his English war bride, Annie McGeean, returned to Ottawa to raise their children. After a long administrative career in Ottawa, Poppa retired and, with Annie, took great pride and special pleasure in watching his grandchildren grow up into the fine adults they are today.

In 2004, Poppa became a resident at the Perley-Rideau Veteran’s Health Centre, and enjoyed many afternoons calling bingo for other residents, and giving his “how-do, how-do” to everyone he met. As his health declined, he continued to amaze the staff with his usual stoicism and strength of character, and his independent spirit.

The family wishes to thank the entire medical and administrative team on 2nd floor, Rideau North, for their constant kind, compassionate and respectful care of Dad.

A wake will be held at Lupton Hall at the Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre", 1750 Russell Road, Ottawa K1G 5Z6 on Tuesday, November 19 at 9:30 am with a celebration Mass at 11:00 am followed by a reception. Private interment to follow. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the charity or cause of your own choice.
