VERA CONSTANCE FORSYTH (nee Backhouse)
November 14, 1920 – September 1, 2016
Vera Constance Forsyth, a long-time resident of the North Gower and Manotick area, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2016 at the Orchard View on the Rideau Retirement Community. Born in Portland, England in 1920, Vera emigrated with her parents and younger sisters Betty and Mabel to Eldersley, Saskatchewan, in 1925. Wheat farming proved to be unprofitable so the young family settled in Verdun, Quebec, and eventually moved to Ottawa around 1938. During World War II, Vera worked at the Hughes Owens plant in Ottawa, met and married her husband Alex in 1945, and together they raised their family of six along with many Pekingese in Manotick and North Gower, Ontario. Vera was a creative and accomplished artist bringing life to her paintings, pottery, machine knitting and needle arts. She also loved music and taught herself to play the Hammond organ. She was a cheerleader to her children, a sewing genius, a fabulous cook and a kind and warm hearted spirit.
Vera will be deeply missed by her children, Douglas (Barb), Neil (Gail), Brian (Kathy), Susan (David Wingert), Sandra (Glyn Jones) and Donald (Sheila). Much loved grandmother of Robert, Julie (Derek), Grant, Erin, David, Megan (Josh), Adam (Megan), Allison, Eric (Jaime), Kevin and Erica. Cherished great-grandmother of Jaime, Branden, Kacee, Emiley, Nathan, Cole, Logan and Brynne. Vera is now reunited with her beloved husband, Alexander John Forsyth, her brother Harry (known as Bud), her sister Mabel and her mother and father, Alice and Harry Backhouse.
We would like to express our gratitude to the staff at Orchard View on Rideau for their excellent care of Mom. Their support and compassion for our Mom and for our families is very much appreciated.
Friends are invited to visit at
Capital Funeral Home & Cemetery
3700 Prince of Wales Drive
613-692-1211
On Sunday, September 11 from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm
A Celebration of Life will be held in the Chapel on Monday, September 12, 2016 at 1:30 p.m.
If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Online condolences may be shared at www.arbormemorial.ca/en/capital.
